Fellows are invited to submit research abstracts for the Capital Young Investigator’s Award (CYIA) competition sponsored by the Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia chapters of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). The competition will be held in conjunction with the Annual Capital Cardiology Symposium and the Annual Meeting of the Maryland and Virginia Chapters of the American College of Cardiology on November 20, 2010 at Heart House in Washington, DC.
Timing and Abstract Submission
Abstracts may represent work in progress or may have been previously submitted for presentation at a national meeting in 2010. A fellow in training (FIT) may submit more than 1 abstract, but no more than 3 as first author. Case reports can be submitted, but will not be eligible for a YIA. No submissions of work already published in a Journal. Abstracts submitted in this competition are not precluded from submission for future publication or presentation. The CYIA competition is part of a regional meeting and, clearly, will not preclude the fellow from submitting the abstract in a future endeavor.
Abstracts are to be submitted to the symposium committee with the attached registration form before September 7, 2010. Abstracts must be submitted electronically to the e-mail address YIA@marylandacc.org. Paper copies are not acceptable.
Eligible Competitors
All adult and pediatric cardiology fellows are eligible to enter the CYIA competition.
Abstract Review, Selection and Notification
Submitted abstracts must fit in the space provided on the form. All submitted abstracts will be reviewed by a Chapter panel of cardiologists. Three finalists will be selected and they will be invited to give an oral slide presentation at the annual meeting described above. The finalists will be notified by October 8, 2010.
Poster Session
Abstracts not chosen for CYIA presentation may still qualify to be exhibited at Heart House at an FIT poster session. FITs who qualify for the poster presentation will be notified at the same time as finalists for the competition. Instructions for poster size and layout will also be sent at this time.
Presentation: Date, Time and Location
The finalists will present their research on Saturday, November 20th, during the Annual Capital Cardiology Symposium and Scientific Exchange at Heart House. Each CYIA finalist will have 15 minutes in which to present followed by 5 minutes for questions. For those abstracts selected for Poster Presentation there will be a dedicated 90 minute session. No other educational programming will be scheduled during these times to encourage attendee interactions with the presenters.
Prizes and Funding
The CYIA winner will receive $500, a plaque, and airfare and hotel re- imbursement to attend the ACC 2011 Scientific Sessions. The two other CYIA finalists will receive $250, in addition to plaques in recognition of their participation. The symposium committee will also present three “Best FIT Poster Capital Competition Awards” consisting of ribbons and $150 prizes.
Registration
Fellows will register by completing a registration form for the meeting. Registration forms may be completed at www.marylandacc.org In addition, the “Chief of Service or Laboratory Verification,” “Abstract Reproduction” form, and “Author Confirmation” forms must be completed. The three CYIA finalists and FITs whose posters have been accepted for exhibition are expected to attend the annual meeting and related events. Meals are included in these activities and one guest/spouse and the children of the finalists are invited to attend the family social events at no charge.
Additional Considerations
Fellows entering the CYIA competition must have significantly participated in the research endeavor (to be confirmed by the fellowship program).
